BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee (CRC) was formed in 1961 when then-Mayor Stanford R. Brookshire appointed a group of citizens to address race relations in Charlotte. The CRC has been an integral part of the human relations support system for the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County for more than 50 years. Our local Fair Housing Ordinance protects people from discrimination when they are renting or buying a home, getting a mortgage, seeking housing assistance, or engaging in other housing-related activities because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability or family status (families with children).
During the month of April, we celebrate Fair Housing Month as our continued commitment to ameliorate discrimination in housing, protecting fair housing rights for all who call Mecklenburg County home. As such, through the joint proclamation we support the 2024 Fair Housing month theme "Fair Housing: The ‘Act’ in Action."
