BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:

Mecklenburg County’s particulate matter (PM 2.5) network was established in 1997 and continues to be 100% funded with federal funds from a Clean Air Act (CAA), Section 103 grant through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The funding pays for two full-time air monitoring specialists, operations, maintenance, and replacement of monitoring equipment. The data collected represents concentrations over a wide area and determines Mecklenburg County’s compliance with national ambient air quality standards.
