BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
This contract is for the construction of the Walker Branch Greenway, which is located in southwest Mecklenburg County, near the intersection of Highway 49 (S. Tryon) and Highway 160 (Steele Creek Road). The project includes 0.7 miles of new greenway construction, extending the existing Walker Branch Greenway to Smith Road. The project will include a 12-foot wide asphalt trail, a neighborhood connection to Walker Creek Drive, two overlooks, a pedestrian bridge, as well as a small connection to the Steele Creek Athletic Association. As part of this project the existing Walker Branch Greenway will be repaved.
PROCUREMENT BACKGROUND:
On April 18, 2019, Mecklenburg County Asset and Facility Management advertised the project in the Charlotte Observer, the Charlotte Post, the Greater Diversity News, and the State Interactive Purchasing website. The documents were also available for viewing at the Mecklenburg County M/W/SBE office, Metrolina Minority Contractors Association, the Hispanic Contractors Association of the Carolinas, the Charlotte Association of General Contractors, and Dodge Data & Analytics. A pre-bid meeting was held on April 25, 2019. Six (6) valid, single prime, unit cost bids were received on May 14, 2019 for the greenway construction work. Husky Construction Corp. was the low bidder in the amount of $958,463.
