ACTION:

1. Approve submitting two grant applications totaling $932,998 for a one-year period (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020) to Mecklenburg Partnership for Children of Mecklenburg County (Smart Start) to support programs promoting child health and safety

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:

The Mecklenburg County Health Department is requesting approval to apply for renewal funding from Smart Start of Mecklenburg County for funding for one year (July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020). The Health Department has been a grant recipient of Smart Start funding since 1995. Grant funds will be used to support the following programs:

 

1.                     Healthy Families Mecklenburg ($565,794) to provide intensive interventions with at-risk first-time mothers to promote healthy parenting skills and early childhood development

2.                     Childcare Health Consultants ($367,204) to provide site assessment, consultation and training for childcare providers, ensuring that the environment is safe, healthy and meets standards.

 

Grant application is due March 20, 2019.

 

These grants require an in-kind match of 19%, specifically $107,501 for Healthy Families, and $69,769 for Child Care Health Consultants.  These match dollars will be generated through reimbursements as part of the Mecklenburg County Cost Allocation Plan reporting. No additional County dollars are required for these grants.
