Staff Contact: Peter Safir, Community Support Services Department, Homeless Services Director
Presentation: No
BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Board of County Commissioners recognizes Homeless Awareness Month to raise awareness of the needs of homeless individuals and families in Mecklenburg County and to recognize the progress that has been made to date. Almost 1000 families experience homelessness at some point during the year in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. The 2018 Point-in-Time (PIT) count identified 1,668 homeless persons experiencing homelessness on the night of January 31, 2018. This was a 13% increase from 2017 to 2018; the first increase since 2011. However, the number of people experiencing homelessness decreased by 16% from 2010 to 2018. As part of the 2018 PIT count, supplemental survey questions provided additional details about the person experiencing homelessness and the circumstances contributing to their homelessness. Just under half (49%) of those surveyed answered that they were experiencing homelessness for the first time. The next PIT count will take place in January of 2019.
