Title:
Resolution Concerning Thompson Orphanage Sculpture
Summary
ACTION:
Approve a Resolution supporting the County's application to NCDOT for the proposed installation of the Trail of History Thompson Orphanage Sculpture for Urban Little Sugar Creek Greenway
Staff Contact: Gwen Cook - Planner, Park and Recreation
Presentation: No
BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
1) The Board of County Commissioners approved an agreement with the Trail of History (TOH), a non-profit organization, to allow the TOH to plan, design and install up to 21 bronze sculptures on Little
Sugar Creek Greenway at the TOH's expense. Six of the sculptures have been placed on the greenway to date.
2) The purpose of this TOH effort is to provide educational and historical context about people that were instrumental in the development of Mecklenburg County. The people selected for this honor are
recommended by the TOH history committee and selected by the Board of TOH. A County representative serves as an ex-officio member of the Board.
3) This partnership provides significant artworks to the County created by nationally known artists. The County maintains the sculptures.
4) The site for the Thompson Orphanage sculpture (Exihibit A), is located on NCDOT right of way property for I-277. The County has an encroachment agreement for construction of Little Sugar Creek
Greenway in that right of way, but that agreement does not include the proposed sculpture.
