BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The ADA was signed into law and passed on July 26, 1990 and later revised by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in September 2010 to reflect new rules and clarify issues that arose over the previous 20 years. Additionally, new federal regulations have recently been created to ensure website accessibility. The Department of Justice recommends periodic reviews of programs, services, activities and facilities for continued compliance.
Mecklenburg County will complete a full self- evaluation of all components of the ADA over the next several years. This presentation will provide an update on these efforts.
