The Department wishes to apply for the “Meet Me at the Park Earth Month” grant through the NRPA. The amount of the grant provided to the Grantee shall be $20,000 for a physical park improvement project in underserved areas tied to one or more of the following focus areas:

1.                     Connecting youth to nature.  Examples include providing environmental education programs, enhancing sustainable features at your park with the addition of educational signage or creating or improving access to nature through nature play areas, trails and greenspace.

2.                     Inspire healthy living.  Examples include implementing recreational programs to get people more active, providing access to walking trails or creating fitness stations.

3.                     Improving youth’s access to sports.  Examples include utilizing vacant spaces for a sports field, improving a sports field, offering sports programming or providing youth access to sports equipment.

The Department will submit four (4) project proposals and a panel comprised of representatives from NRPA, Disney, ABC and ESPN will narrow the list to three potential projects. The project for which the funds will be used will then be determined by the results of a public on-line voting process through the “Meet Me at the Park Earth Month” website managed by NRPA. The four proposed projects to be submitted for consideration by the aforementioned panel are:

1)                     Park Your Bike - Develop skills to maintain and operate bicycles for youth

2)                     Urban Skate Park for Beginners - Grayson Park/Naomi Drenan Recreation Center

3)                     Eva B. Barber Neighborhood Park Outdoor Fitness Zone

4)                     Dugout Covers for three (3) baseball fields at Revolution Park

The County has received grant funding the past three (3) fiscal years for $20,000 each year.

The deadline for submission of this grant application is January 10, 2018 (a change from the February deadline in the past).  The Department will move forward with submission of the application in anticipation of Board approval.  Should the Board not approve, the application will be pulled.

Increase to revenues and associated expenditures in the General Fund (G001) of up to $20,000 in the current fiscal year.
