BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
On November 12, 2025 the federal government minted the last penny. Accordingly, local governments across the country are exploring how to proactively implement policies and processes to plan for a potential penny shortage that could impact cash transactions at local governments.
This presentation provides a briefing on how Mecklenburg County is proactively working on a project to implement a new policy and process in the event of a future penny shortage in Mecklenburg County.
