BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
According to Love Is Respect, “1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults.” And among U.S. adults, “1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men who experienced rape, physical violence, and stalking by an intimate partner first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age.” Among Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students who responded to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2019, 9% reported being physically hurt by someone they were dating or going out with one or more times in the past 12 months, compared with 7% in 2017. Recognizing Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month honors the experiences of teens in our community, amplifies the message that teens deserve healthy relationships, and highlights resources available to support teens who are experiencing unhealthy or abusive relationships.
