BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:

Mecklenburg County plays a significant role in the statewide increase in the number of older adults and reflects broader demographic changes in North Carolina. Ageism, defined as any form of discrimination or negative stereotyping due to age, creates barriers to opportunity and negatively affects access to education, employment, housing, health care, and civic engagement.

Executive Order 280 affirmed North Carolina’s commitment to supporting residents across all stages of life and directed the development of the All Ages, All Stages NC plan, which identifies the reduction of ageism as a critical objective. Mecklenburg County aligns with this statewide vision and continues to strengthen local programs that promote dignity, respect, and opportunity for all residents.

Observing Ageism Awareness Day highlights the County’s ongoing commitment to fostering a community where individuals of every age can thrive.
