BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
Older Americans Month is observed each May to recognize the significant contributions of older adults and to raise awareness about the importance of supporting their health, independence, and well-being. In Mecklenburg County, older adults are a vital part of the community, serving as leaders, caregivers, volunteers, and mentors whose experiences and knowledge strengthen families and neighborhoods.
Recognizing Older Americans Month provides an opportunity to highlight the needs and challenges that may come with aging, including access to healthcare, social connection, nutrition, and safety. It also reinforces the County’s commitment to delivering services through Mecklenburg County Services for Adults that help residents age with dignity and remain active and engaged in their communities.
The 2026 theme, “Champion Your Health,” emphasizes the importance of empowering older adults to take charge of their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By promoting healthy lifestyles, preventive care, and community engagement, Mecklenburg County encourages all residents to support and celebrate older adults.
This recognition affirms the County’s role in fostering an age-friendly community and underscores the shared responsibility of individuals, families, organizations, and local government to ensure that older adults have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
