BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
Historic Preservation Month, also known as Preservation Month, is observed every May across the United States to recognize and celebrate the importance of historic sites, neighborhoods, and landmarks in shaping communities and preserving cultural heritage. The observance began in 1973 as National Preservation Week and was expanded to a monthlong celebration in 2005 to provide more opportunities for organizations to promote heritage and preservation efforts. It was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and is supported by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Park Service.
During May, communities host events, tours, and educational programs to highlight historic buildings, districts, and cultural landmarks. The month also emphasizes the social, economic, and cultural benefits of preservation, including heritage tourism, community pride, and economic revitalization. Many states and local governments issue proclamations recognizing May as Historic Preservation Month, encouraging public participation and awareness.
