BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority ("Atrium Health") approached the County with a request to support its petition with the City of Charlotte's Department of Transportation (CDOT) to rename approximately 1,240 LF of the existing Baxter Street within the Pearl Innovation District to Pearl Park Way.  Several buildings proposed to be part of Atrium's Pearl Innovation District are planned to front along this portion of Baxter Street.  The buildings at the site of the current Baxter (and future Pearl Park Way) and S. McDowell Streets will include a 14-story education building and a 10-story research building.

As currently configured, the street that runs east - west between Kenilworth Avenue and S. McDowell Street is named Pearl Park Way along one segment of the road and Baxter Street along another segment of the road.  The road is named Pearl Park Way along the portion of the street that is adjacent to the County's Pearl Street Park.  For consistency and to better identify with prominent landmarks such as the park and the new Pearl Innovation District, Atrium Health wishes to have this segment of the street identified entirely as Pearl Park Way.

Staff with the County's Park and Recreation Department reviewed Atrium's request and is supportive of the request.  The County will incur none or very minimal, if at all, costs associated with this request.
