Receive information on the County's future purchase and redevelopment of the former Smith School, located at 1600 Tyvola Road (a portion of Tax Parcel 171-152-01), in the City of Charlotte for housing purposes

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
To address the shortage of obtainable housing in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community, the Board approved the County purchasing +/- 8.2 acres of the former Smith School property at 1600 Tyvola Road in Charlotte at its April 7, 2026 meeting, contingent upon approval by the Board of Education ("BOE"). Subsequently, the BOE approved the purchase at its April 28th meeting. The purchase arrangement between the County and CMS includes the County funding demolition of the existing building and CMS transferring ownership of the subdivided 8.2 acre portion of the property to the County upon completion of abatement and demolition activities.
Staff will share information with the Board on the County's plan to redevelop the site for future housing targeted for County and CMS staff. Information presented will include the County's vision for the site, high-level development strategy, and next steps to be taken by staff towards implementation of the project.
