Adopt a resolution requesting the Board of Transportation to abandon a portion of the right-of-way and maintenance for June Washam Road.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
Three property owners have petitioned the Board of County Commissioners to request the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) abandon a portion of the right-of-way and maintenance of June Washam Road (0.268 acres). June Washam Road was realigned to facilitate the Kenmare development. NCDOT has accepted maintenance of the realigned section of June Washam Road. This portion of June Washam Road (SR 2422) is located in the northeast portion of the County and connects to Sound Road. Attached is a vicinity map showing the location. This portion of June Washam Road is currently located in the unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County adjacent to the Town of Davidson corporate limits. The Town approved the original subdivision which included the realignment of the road and the Planning Director has no objection to the abandonment. NCDOT requested a resolution of support from the County. See attached email dated April 3, 2024. Also, all three property owners requested that the County abandon this portion of June Washam Road. See Petition and Exhibit A attached.
The provisions of General Statute section 136-63 allow a property owner to petition the Board of County Commissioners to request the Board of Transportation to abandon any road in the secondary system when the best interest of the people of the county will be served by the abandonment. All of the property owners adjacent to this portion of June Washam Road have signed the petition requesting the abandonment.
