Title
Rescind the Mecklenburg County Healthy Vending Policy Resolution
Action
ACTION:
Based upon current information and a recommendation from the Interim Public Health Director, take action as the Board of County Commissioners sitting as a Consolidated Human Services Agency (CHSA), to rescind the Mecklenburg County Healthy Vending Policy Resolution.
Staff Contact: Kimberly Scott, DrPH, MPH, Interim Health Director
Presentation: No
BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The limited pool of vendors able to service Mecklenburg County vending machines has caused contracting and servicing delays, and this policy has become a limiting factor. Product restrictions require ongoing monitoring, may affect revenue sharing under the proposed vending agreement, and risk leaving the county without a willing vending provider.
Instead, the Health Department will focus on strengthening healthy catering practices by providing a standardized toolkit that highlights vendors and menu options aligned with evidence-based healthy eating guidelines and would include the vendors that are most utilized currently, as well as any additional recommendations that offer options that adhere to the guidelines, making healthier choices more accessible for meetings and events. The Health Department will also work to support the exploration of alternative vending options.
