ACTION:

Staff Contact: Dena R. Diorio, County Manager

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Lake Norman Marine Commission was established pursuant to legislation adopted in 1969 and has continuously operated since that time. Pursuant to a Resolution adopted on May 5, 2025, Lincoln County has withdrawn from the Commission, effective June 30, 2025. That action effectively dissolves the Lake Norman Marine Commission as a separate entity, as provided by the enacting legislation. As a result a Resolution is necessary to allow all law enforcement officers with territorial jurisdiction on any part of Lake Norman or its shoreline within the limits of their subject matter jurisdiction to have peace officer status in enforcing laws over all of Lake Norman and its shoreline area. The four affected counties, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, and Mecklenburg, will each adopt a joint resolution restating the authority of law enforcement to exercise territorial jurisdiction across the entirety of the lake and its shoreline.
