ACTION:

Appointments are needed on the Lake Norman Marine Commission to fill two terms.

BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:

On September 6, 2025, the Board of County Commissioners nominated the following candidates for appointment consideration to the Lake Norman Marine Commission: Richard Gaskins, Robby Maschhaupt, Michael Miltich, Michael Tobin, and Gregory Truesdell.

 

Per Board policy, the Ad Hoc Interview Committee interviewed all five (5) nominees on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.  At the conclusion of the interviews, the Ad-Hoc Committee unanimously recommended Richard Gaskins and Greg Truesdell.

 

The Ad-Hoc Interview Committee was comprised of the following Commissioners: Elaine Powell (Chair), Laura Meier, Susan Rodriguez-McDowell, and Yvette Townsend-Ingram.

 

In accordance with N.C.G.S. § 77-89.3, Mecklenburg County shall appoint two (2) members to the Commission, who:

 

                     Shall be a full-time resident of Mecklenburg County for at least nine (9) months each year;

                     Shall serve a five (5)-year term, unless otherwise specified to stagger initial terms;

                     Shall meet the ethical requirements and conflict-of-interest standards of N.C.G.S. § 77-89.3(f); and

                     May be removed for cause under N.C.G.S. § 143B-13.

 

Each participating local government shall appoint two members to the Commission, each of whom shall be an individual who has demonstrated proficiency in community engagement and consensus-building across multiple stakeholder groups. For the initial appointments, each participating local government shall appoint one commissioner to serve a four-year term and a second commissioner to serve a five-year term. Except as otherwise provided for the initial appointments, each commissioner shall serve a five-year term.
