BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) was made aware that North Carolina Senate Bill (NC SB) 257 was signed into law by Governor Josh Stein on July 7, 2026. Section 41.3 of the NC SB 257 provides for one-time bonuses in the amount of $1,750 to be distributed to sworn local law enforcement officers across the state. Including additional funding for the employer share of FICA, the amount awarded per full-time employee is $1,883.87. If the sworn officer is a part-time employee, the amount is prorated. As such, the MCSO, through the certification process, has identified and submitted to the NC SBI payroll information certifying that as of June 30, 2026, there were 241 full-time and 25 limited part-time deputies employed at the MCSO, who are eligible to receive the one-time bonus. Per the calculation methodology specified by the NC SBI, total amount calculated to be received and disbursed to the qualified staff is $473,456.72. Per the NC SBI, the disbursement of $473,456.72 to the Mecklenburg County will occur on or around October 15, 2026.
