BACKGROUND/JUSTIFICATION:

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has been receiving the U.S. Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance (JAG) grant since 2012. The FY2025 awarded amount is $123,800 and will be directed towards procurement of a new body scanner for the MCSO Arrest Processing Center. It is essential to pursue new technology and equipment to aid with finding contraband before it enters the Detention Center. The implementation of a new body scanner, with the available upgraded artificial intelligence software, would serve to assist deputies with locating and confiscating controlled substances, as well as other prohibited items. An upgraded body scanner is a long-term investment that would result in a safer environment for staff, arrestees, and residents in the Arrest Processing Center and the Detention Center.
